Now that's a case of the hives

The Friday I took Ariel back to Cedar, Aaron started an anti-biotic called Cefdinir. Unfortunately, we didn't know he was seriously allergic to that medicine until he broke out in the worst case of hives I had ever seen. Since I was out of town, Todd sent me a picture of some of the hives on his stomach. It looked so bad that I immediately called the doctor and set up a second doctor appointment that afternoon. They had to started him on oral steroids and benadryl. He ended up taking the steroids for 8 days. They told us the hives could last up to two weeks. Luckily they only lasted for three days...but they were very intense. When I came home on Saturday night, he looked terrible, he was covered. They were in his hair, eyebrows, everywhere. I was so freaked out looking at the hives, Aaron was trying to calm ME down. I felt very bad for him, but he was a brave little trooper. The pharmacist said, in the future we should avoid the whole cephalsporin family. Occasionally, I get a single hive on my neck when I am stressed. That one little hive can drive me crazy, I can't imagine a whole body of them. Miserable!

In his hair, too? Poor kid. I hope he stays far away from such drugs in the future! I can't believe he didn't itch himself to death - I would have had sores from scratching, I'm sure of it!

That's the same things as Omnicef, I think, which is amazing to me. My kids have had omnicef a hundred times and it saved our lives with all Mikey's ear infections - I can't believe he hasn't had a reaction to it earlier in life. . . bodies are so weird.

Brooke, that's weird because I know he used to take Omnicef for ear infections when he was little. So I guess he developed the allergy when older. I agree bodies are very weird!
